Standard of Practice
Standards of Practice Public Comment Update
The Standards of Practice (SoP) committee has been diligently working on the most significant update to ASHI's SoP in over twenty years. The SoP is a critical document that underpins everything home inspectors do. The proposed changes are now open for Public Comment. This is the first step towards a membership vote on the proposed SoP changes. Town halls will be held to address concerns and comments from all stakeholders before a ballot is sent out. If affirmed, the new SoP will have an implementation date, allowing ample time for adjustment. Please click on the Access the Proposed SoP updates here link below to see the proposed ASHI Standard of Practice and the Rationale Chart. We ask you send questions, comments, or suggestions about the proposed SoP Changes to standards@ashi.org.
Standards of Practice Public Comment Update above
The ASHI Standard of Practice was an essential tool in defining home inspection as a recognized profession and gain traction within the real estate market. Refined over the years, the Standard remains an influential document across the industry, and ASHI Members continue to adhere to the Standard today.
The document is divided into specific home systems and details how home inspectors should inspect each component. The ASHI Standard of Practice helps guide the inspector during the home inspection, and ensure their client will receive a thorough and effective inspection. ASHI encourages everyone involved with the home buying process to review the Standard of Practice to understand the home inspector's role in the process.
