About ASHI Government Affairs

The world of home inspection is always evolving - with more states requiring licensing, a growing body of home science knowledge, and an increasing number of homebuyers seeking to make smart investments in their homes. To stay ahead of the curve, ASHI works hard to keep policymakers informed about the crucial role that home inspection plays in protecting the American public.

ASHI Government Affairs (AGA)

ASHI understands that protecting the future of the home inspection industry requires a presence on Capitol Hill. That's why we created the ASHI Government Affairs (AGA) division. This division ensures that policymakers and legislative bodies hear the voices of home inspectors nationwide, advocating for the best interests of both the industry and the American public.

We believe that this advocacy is crucial to the industry's long-term success. Individual ASHI Members simply cannot provide this level of representation for themselves. With ASHI's advocacy efforts, our members can focus on what they do best - performing high-quality home inspections and running their businesses.

In the early stages of the home inspection profession, various parties proposed legislation to shape its development. The suggested governance covered everything from directing how home inspectors should act to the scope of an inspection and what they should be liable for during and after an inspection. Additionally, there was discussion about whether home inspectors should be governed by appraisers, real estate agents, mortgage brokers, or the construction industry.

In response to this mounting political landscape, ASHI created the AGA to explain to lawmakers the critical role of home inspection in protecting homebuyers during the home buying process. Home inspectors' voices were heard, and ultimately they were allowed to remain independent and autonomous. This is just one example of how ASHI's advocacy efforts have protected the industry and ensured that it remains a vital resource for homebuyers and homeowners.
